STAAR Test
What you need to know about the STAAR
The State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) test was first implemented in 2012 and replaced the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) test. STAR is a standardized test provided by Texas to undergraduate and graduate students. It’s state-mandated, which means that if a public school receives state funding from Texas, it must test it, and your child won’t be able to choose from it. Private schools, charter schools, and homeschooling students do not have to complete it. STAR test dates usually occur in the spring months around April.
Your child will have 4 hours to complete the STAR test (5 hours for English I and II).
The STAR EOC (End-of-Course) assessment tests evaluate each high school student’s compression of Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) to determine whether each student is ready for college and/or a career. For younger students, grades 3-8, the test indicates their progress during the year. For example, in primary and secondary schools, STAR content focuses on what is taught in the current academic year instead of the knowledge and skills acquired over many years. In grades 5 and 8, a student may advance to a higher grade only by passing the reading and math examinations or by a unanimous decision of their classification committee. Students have three opportunities to go through math and reading. The STAAR tests for English I and II, Algebra I, Biology, and History are part of each students’ graduation requirements.

We use two types of test questions for the STAAR program—test forms and sample questions. Both are very helpful to understanding the trends and can act as a blueprint for well-prepared students. Each year STAAR test banks will release sample test questions that may or may not have been used previously in prior versions of the test.
Upon taking the STAAR assessment tests, students will receive a score indicating their performance and fall into one of three categories:
Level III: Advanced Academic Performance
Level II: Satisfactory Academic Performance
Level I: Unsatisfactory Academic Performance
